Steadman Bucknell Henderson 

Class of 1937

Died: Aug. 31, 1944, age 25
 

Postmaster J. Steadman Henderson and his wife Kathleen received the news of their only son’s death a few days after he died from wounds received on active service in Italy. Lieutenant Henderson, 25, succumbed August 31,1944 and was buried in Montecchio War Cemetery in the Italian province of Pesaro. 

Henderson grew up on Alma Street in Moncton, went to Moncton High School, sailed with the Shediac Bay Yacht Club, attended St. George’s Church and graduated from the University of New Brunswick with a Bachelor of Science in engineering. 

Active in the Canadian Officers Training Corps during his student days, he enlisted in the Canadian Active Army immediately upon graduation and was granted his commission. After training at Camp Borden in Ontario, he went overseas in October of 1940 and served in various parts of England. He took part in the invasion of mainland Italy with the 5th Armoured Regiment 8th Princess Louise’s Hussars and was mortally wounded while fighting on the Adriatic front.
